Guatemala
edges Barbados in five sets
MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico, July 22, 2010 – Guatemala edged Barbados
3-2 (26-24, 21-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-10) in an eliminatory match
for the 5-8 positions of the women’s volleyball tournament at
the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games on Thursday.
Veteran Aneliesse Burmeister led four Guatemalans in double
figures with 21 points and Blanca Recinos added 16. Rut Gomez
compiled five blocks among her 11 tallies and Diana Arias
contributed 10 points. Barbados’ Shari Matthews had a match-high
23 points while Sharon Bovell and Anicia Wood added 16 and 11
respectively.
“It
was tough match with a lot of ups and downs but from the fourth
set on we played more focused and with more desire”, Burmeister
said.
“It
is the best we have played in the tournament so it is a very
tough loss to accept,” Barbados’ Janelle Chase-Mayers said.
